British wine is having a serious moment. Going from “wait… we make wine?” to popping up on the lists of some of the world’s top restaurants - Not bad for a country better known for tea and rainy days.
But how much do you really know about the UK’s growing wine scene? Could you tell a Bacchus from a Seyval Blanc?
Pour yourself a glass and get stuck in - here are some fun and surprising facts about British wine that are guaranteed to impress at your next dinner party.

1. We've Been Making Wine Since Roman Times
UK wine might feel like a new discovery, but it actually dates all the way back to Roman Britain. Vines were first planted around 43 AD - so it’s fair to say we’ve had a little practice since then.
2. The Scandinavians love us!
Over 60% of UK wine exports head to Scandinavia, where our bottles are in seriously high demand - especially sparkling wine. It turns out, our crisp, cool-climate bubbles are a perfect match for Nordic tastes.
3. There are over 1000 vineyards (and counting!)
The UK wine industry is booming, with vineyards popping up all over the country, especially across the south of England where climate and chalky soils lend themselves to excellent grape growing. What was once a niche industry is now one of the fastest-growing in the UK.
4. Bacchus is Britain’s signature grape
Although representing just 8% of plantings (Chardonnay takes the top spot), Bacchus is one of the UK’s standout grape varieties. Sometimes known as “England’s answer to Sauvignon Blanc'', it is known for its fresh, aromatic style - think elderflower, citrus, and a hint of lemon.

5. Even Champagne houses are planting vines in England
It’s not just local producers making waves! Prestigious Champagne houses like Pommery and Taittinger have planted vineyards in southern England. Their investment highlights the global recognition of English sparkling wine as a serious competitor on the world stage.
